Why I Started This Business
My Tesla Accessories began as a way to teach my 13-year-old son how to run a business after he showed a real interest in starting something of his own. After 18 years in the military and a serious bike accident on the way to work that left me with spinal injuries and chronic back pain, I also needed a new focus and a positive outlet.
The business became both a learning project for him and a form of therapy for me, helping me manage anxiety and PTSD from my service between 1985 and 2003.
On 27 August 2002, I suffered a push-bike accident that resulted in an incomplete tetraplegia injury below C4, leaving me without movement from the neck down and 4 months in the Spinal Care Unit at the PA Hospital here in Brisbane.
After spending nearly 18 months in total relearning how to eat, walk, hold objects, move and function, I came back stronger. Although the experience permanently affected my motor skills and limits the installations I can personally perform, it completely reshaped my outlook on life.
Having been at the bottom, there really is only one direction left to go.
Wanting to be a genuine role model for my son, I believed the best way was to show him real-world business experience first-hand. After my injury, the Army and I parted ways, and I drew on my background in physical training to start a personal training business from 2004 to 2018.
Those years taught me what worked and what didn't in small business, especially in the days before social media became central to marketing. Above all, they taught me the value of customer service and strong relationships.
My Tesla Accessories is now a journey on my own as my son has branched out into clothing reselling online.
