Tesla Model YL 6-Seater vs Model Y Juniper: Which Is Right for Your Family?

Tesla Model YL 6-Seater vs Model Y Juniper: Which Is Right for Your Family?

Two of the most exciting Teslas on Australian roads right now are the Model Y Juniper and the brand-new Model YL 6-Seater. Both are exceptional electric vehicles — but they're built for different families and different lifestyles.

If you're trying to decide between the two, or you've already bought one and want to know which accessories fit your specific model, this guide is for you.

As a Tesla owner and accessories specialist who's been fitting out Model Ys since 2022, I'll walk you through the real-world differences — seating, boot space, accessories compatibility, and which model makes more sense depending on how you use your car.

Quick Answer: What's the Core Difference?

The Model Y Juniper is the refreshed 5-seat Model Y (2024+). It's Tesla's best-selling vehicle globally — refined, efficient, and packed with tech upgrades over the original Model Y.

The Model YL 6-Seater (also called the Model Y Launch Edition) is a 6-seat variant launched in Australia in 2026. It adds a third row of seating, making it a genuine 3-row family SUV in a Tesla package.

Same platform. Very different interior. And that difference matters a lot when it comes to accessories.

Seating: 5 Seats vs 6 Seats

The Juniper seats five across two rows — two in the front, three in the rear. It's a comfortable, spacious cabin for families of up to five.

The YL adds a third row, seating six across three rows — two in the front, two in the middle, and two in the rear third row. The third row is best suited to children or shorter adults on shorter trips, similar to other 3-row SUVs in this class.

Who wins on seating? If you regularly carry more than five people — school runs with multiple kids, extended family road trips, or carpooling — the YL is the clear winner. For most families of four or five, the Juniper is more than enough.

Boot Space: A Critical Difference

This is where the two models diverge most significantly for everyday use.

The Juniper has a generous rear boot plus the frunk (front trunk) — giving you excellent cargo capacity when the rear seats are in use.

The YL has a smaller rear boot when the third row is upright, because the third-row seats take up space. When the third row is folded flat, boot space increases significantly — but you lose the sixth seat.

This is the classic 3-row SUV trade-off: more seats means less boot space when all rows are in use.

Practical tip: If you're buying the YL for camping or road trips, plan around the third row being folded — which gives you a large, flat cargo area perfect for a camping mattress, fridge, and gear.

Accessories Compatibility: What Fits Which Model?

This is the question we get asked most at My Tesla Accessories — and it's important to get right, because some accessories are model-specific.

YL-Exclusive Accessories (do NOT fit Juniper)

  • Tesla YL All-Weather Floor Mats (4-piece RHD) — covers all three rows including the third row. The Juniper uses a 3-piece set. These are not interchangeable. $239.95 — pre-order, estimated July 2026 dispatch.
  • Tesla YL Boot Liner — precision-moulded to the YL boot with the third row upright. The Juniper boot liner does not fit the YL. $79.95 — pre-order, estimated July 2026 dispatch.
  • Tesla YL Back Seat Protector for Trunk — protects the rear-facing surface of the third-row seats from boot loading. Juniper doesn't have a third row, so this is YL-only. $49.95 — pre-order, estimated July 2026 dispatch.

Juniper-Exclusive Accessories (do NOT fit YL)

  • Tesla Juniper Essentials Bundle — sunshade, armrest cover, console storage, and floor mats bundled for the Juniper. $244.95.
  • Tesla Model Y Juniper Starter Bundle — floor mats, trunk liner, and console organiser for the Juniper. $210.95.

Shared Accessories (fit BOTH Juniper and YL)

The good news is that many of our most popular accessories are compatible with both models:

  • Tesla Power Frunk — compatible with Juniper and YL. From $599.95.
  • USB Docking Hub (65W) — available in Juniper and YL variants. From $59.95.
  • Tesla Swivel Screen Mount — available in Juniper and YL variants. From $159.00.
  • Tesla Model Y Side Fridge 16L — fits Juniper, YL, and 2020–2024 Model Y. $599.00.
  • Tesla Roof Racks (70kg rated) — compatible with Juniper and YL. $399.95.
  • Tesla Flat Mud Flaps — fits Juniper, YL, and 2025+. $36.95.

  • MagSafe Phone Holder — Highland/Juniper/YL bracket available. $34.99.
  • Centre Console Storage Organiser — available in Juniper and YL 6-Seater variants. $48.95.
  • Tesla Frunk Esky 18L — fits Juniper and YL. $129.00.
  • Tesla Wiper Blade Replacements — YL 6-Seater variant available. $37.95.
  • Tesla Camping Tent — compatible with Model Y, Juniper, and YL.
  • Tesla Camping Mattress — fits the flat cargo area of both models when rear seats are folded.

Camping and Road Trips: Which Model Is Better?

Both models are excellent camping platforms — but they work differently.

The Juniper with rear seats folded flat gives you a large, uninterrupted sleeping area. Pair it with our Tesla Camping Mattress, Side Fridge 16L or Sub Trunk Fridge 33L, and the 8-Piece Shade Set and you have a complete camping setup.

The YL with the third row folded gives you a similarly large cargo area — arguably even more versatile because you can choose to use the third row for extra passengers on the way to the campsite, then fold it flat when you arrive. The Side Fridge 16L fits the YL perfectly.

Verdict: Both are great for camping. The YL gives you more flexibility — carry the family to the campsite with all six seats, then convert to a sleeping platform when you arrive.

Which Model Is Right for You?

Choose the Model Y Juniper if:

  • Your family is 4–5 people
  • You prioritise boot space and cargo capacity
  • You want the widest range of accessories available right now
  • You do regular camping or road trips and want maximum flat sleeping space

Choose the Model YL 6-Seater if:

  • Your family is 6 people, or you regularly carry extra passengers
  • You do school runs with multiple kids
  • You want a 3-row SUV without compromising on EV performance
  • You want the flexibility of 6 seats AND a large cargo area (with third row folded)

A Note on YL Accessories Availability

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my Juniper accessories on the YL?

Some yes, some no. Interior accessories like floor mats and boot liners are model-specific — the Juniper 3-piece mat set does not fit the YL's 3-row interior. However, many accessories like the Power Frunk, Side Fridge, Roof Racks, and USB Hub are compatible with both. Always check the product description for YL compatibility before purchasing.

Is the YL available in Australia right now?

Yes — the Tesla Model YL 6-Seater launched in Australia in 2026. It's available through Tesla's website and showrooms.

Does the YL have a frunk?

Yes — the YL retains the frunk (front trunk) from the Model Y platform. Our Power Frunk motorised upgrade is compatible with the YL.

What's the best starter accessory pack for a new YL owner?

We recommend starting with the YL-specific floor mats, boot liner, and seat protector to protect your interior from day one. From there, the USB Docking Hub and MagSafe Phone Holder are popular first purchases. Browse our Tesla Model YL 6 Seater Accessories collection for the full range.

Are YL accessories more expensive than Juniper accessories?

YL-specific accessories like the 4-piece floor mat set ($239.95) are slightly more expensive than the Juniper 3-piece set ($144.95) because they cover three rows instead of two. Shared accessories like the  Roof Racks, centre storage compartments, dash display screens and Power Frunk are the same price for both models.
