If you've just taken delivery of a Tesla Model Y L — or you're about to — there's one feature generating more excitement than almost anything else: Vehicle-to-Load, or V2L.
It's the first time Tesla has ever offered this capability in Australia. For YL owners who love camping, road trips, remote work, or just being prepared for anything — it changes everything.
Here's everything you need to know.
What is V2L on the Tesla Model Y L?
Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) lets you draw power directly from your car's battery to run external electrical devices and appliances — essentially turning your Tesla into a giant portable power station.
The Tesla Model Y L is the first Tesla ever sold in Australia to offer V2L capability. It supplies up to BkW of continuous power output via an available adapter — enough to run most household appliances and camping gear.
The system operates until the battery drops to 10% state of charge (or your chosen limit), giving you access to the vast majority of the YL's 81kWh battery. At the YL's real-world efficiency of around 14kWh/100km, that's potentially 50+ kWh of usable V2L capacity.
How Does V2L Work on the Tesla YL?
V2L works through the vehicle's charge port. You plug in the Tesla Outlet Adapter, which converts the car's DC battery power to 230V AC — the same standard Australian power outlet you'd find at home.
Official Tesla Outlet Adapter specs:
- Output: 230V / 15A
- Maximum power: 3.5kW
- Connector: Tesla charge port (YL specific)
- Price: AUD $145 from the Tesla Shop
- Availability: Listed as "coming soon" in the Tesla Australian online store as of June 2026
The adapter is currently only available for the Model Y L — it is not compatible with the standard Model Y Juniper, Model Y, or Model 3.
How to Activate V2L on the Tesla Model Y L — Step by Step
Tesla has officially documented V2L in the Model Y L owner's manual under "Powering Devices with the Charge Port (6-Seater Only)". Here's how to activate it:
- Park the car — the vehicle must be in Park and not actively charging.
- Open Controls on the touchscreen — look for the "External Discharge" or "Powering Devices" option.
- Set your discharge limit — choose the minimum battery percentage you want to retain. The system will stop automatically at this level (default is 10%).
- Plug the Tesla Outlet Adapter into the charge port — the touchscreen will show "Charging" — this is normal. V2L uses the charging protocol in reverse.
- Green light on the adapter = power is flowing — you're ready to plug in your appliances.
- Plug your appliance into the adapter's 15A Australian outlet — kettle, induction cooktop, laptop, whatever you need.
- Monitor via the touchscreen — it shows real-time power draw and estimated runtime remaining.
- The system stops automatically at 10% battery or your set limit — no manual intervention needed.
💡 Pro tip for overnight use: Activate Camp Mode before enabling V2L. Camp Mode keeps the battery relay closed for long-duration discharge, which is important for extended overnight sessions. Turn Camp Mode on first, then follow the steps above.
What Can You Power with 3.3kW?
To put 3.3kW into perspective, here's what you can run from your YL's V2L system:
| Appliance | Typical Power Draw | Run from V2L? |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop (standard cable) | 45–100W | ✅ Yes — for days |
| Phone/tablet charger | 5–20W | ✅ Yes |
| Coffee machine | 800–1,200W | ✅ Yes |
| Toaster | 800–1,200W | ✅ Yes |
| Portable induction cooktop | 1,000–2,000W | ✅ Yes |
| Microwave | 1,000–1,500W | ✅ Yes |
| Power drill | 500–1,000W | ✅ Yes |
| Angle grinder | 1,000–2,000W | ✅ Yes |
| e-Bike charger | 100–500W | ✅ Yes |
| Hair dryer | 1,200–2,400W | ⚠️ Borderline |
| Kettle | 2,400W | ⚠️ At limit |
At 3.3kW you can comfortably run multiple lower-draw devices simultaneously. And for temperature control while parked, the YL's built-in Camp Mode handles heating and cooling — no external appliances needed.
Tip: Pair V2L with our Sub Trunk Fridge (33L) or Side Fridge (16L) for a complete camp setup — run your fridge from the 12V boot outlet and use V2L for everything else that needs full 230V power.
Real-World Use Cases for Australian YL Owners
🏕️ Camping & Road Trips
Park at a remote campsite, run your induction cooktop for dinner, boil the kettle for a morning coffee, and toast some bread — all from your car. The YL's 12V boot outlet keeps your fridge running, while V2L handles the high-draw appliances that would normally need a generator. No gas, no noise, no fuel.
🎮 Endless Gaming & Entertainment
Plug in a laptop or gaming setup via a standard power cable and you have a genuinely capable entertainment rig running off the YL's battery. Whether it's the kids gaming on a long stop or you working through a Netflix backlog at a campsite — the YL's 50+ kWh of usable V2L capacity means you're not going to run out of power any time soon.
💼 Mobile Office / Remote Work
The YL makes a genuinely capable mobile office. Pull up at a lookout or national park, fold out the rear tables, plug in your laptop via a standard cable, connect to your hotspot and work. No generator noise, no exhaust fumes, no fuel costs — and Camp Mode keeps the cabin at a comfortable temperature while you do it.
🔧 Tradies & Work Sites
Power tools on a worksite without a generator. The YL can run drills, circular saws, grinders and other trade tools rated under 3.3kW directly from the charge port. A mobile power source on wheels — without the noise or the fuel.
⚡ Emergency Backup Power
Queensland summers bring storms, flooding and power outages. With V2L you can keep your fridge running, charge medical devices, power lights and keep phones charged during an outage — potentially for several days on a full charge without significantly impacting your driving range.
🚗 Vehicle-to-Vehicle Charging
The Model Y L also supports vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging — meaning you can give a stranded EV owner a boost directly from your car. A genuinely useful feature for the growing Australian EV community.
What About Aftermarket V2L Adapters?
Tesla's official adapter is $145 and listed as "coming soon" as of June 2026. Aftermarket options exist and are typically priced lower.
Important: Tesla's official documentation states that the vehicle warranty does not cover damage caused by third-party bi-directional adaptors or chargers. If you choose an aftermarket adapter, buy from a reputable supplier and ensure it meets Australian safety standards.
The Accessories That Make V2L Come Alive
V2L on its own is powerful. But the real magic is in the high-draw appliances that the YL's 12V system simply can't handle — the things that normally require a generator or a dedicated power station. Here's where V2L earns its keep.
☕ Kettle & Coffee Machine
A travel kettle draws around 1,000–1,200W and a coffee machine similar — both well within V2L's 3.3kW limit. Wake up at a remote campsite, boil water for a plunger or run a proper espresso machine from your car. No gas, no fuss.
🥖 Toaster
A standard toaster draws 800–1,200W — no problem for V2L. Pair it with your kettle for a proper campsite breakfast without a camp stove in sight. Simple, but genuinely impressive when you're 200km from the nearest town.
🔥 Portable Induction Cooktop
A single-burner induction cooktop draws 1,000–2,000W — enough to cook a full meal. Silent, clean, gas-free camp cooking running entirely off your car. At a low simmer setting (around 500–800W), you can cook for extended periods with minimal battery impact.
💻 Laptop & Gaming Setup
Plug in via a standard power cable and run a laptop, monitor, or gaming setup indefinitely. Whether it's the kids on a long stop or you working remotely, the YL's V2L capacity means you won't be rationing screen time. Camp Mode keeps the cabin comfortable while you're at it.
🪑 Electric Folding Rear Tables
Our Tesla YL Electric Folding Tables for the second row give you the surface to actually use all of this. Set up your induction cooktop, kettle and coffee machine on a stable, purpose-built table inside or alongside your YL — the difference between balancing gear on a tailgate and having a proper camp kitchen setup.
🏕️ Camping Shade Set
Pair your V2L-powered camp kitchen with the Tesla Camping Shade Set for a complete outdoor setup. Block the Queensland sun, power your gear, and make your YL the most capable camping vehicle at any site.
🚙 Tesla YL Roof Racks (coming late July 2026)
Custom-fit roof racks designed specifically for the Tesla Model Y L are arriving late July 2026. Add a rooftop cargo setup to your YL and you've got the ultimate road trip vehicle — V2L powering your camp kitchen below, gear loaded up top. Get in touch to be notified when they land.
🍡 Tesla YL Side Fridge (coming September 2026)
A custom-fit side fridge engineered specifically for the YL's third-row layout and boot space. Expected arrival September 2026 — get in touch if you'd like to be notified when it's available.
🛏️ YL Camping Mattress (coming soon)
A custom-fit sleeping mattress designed specifically for the YL's longer, taller interior. Combined with Camp Mode and V2L-powered gear, the YL becomes a genuinely comfortable overnight camping vehicle.
When Will the Tesla V2L Adapter Be Available in Australia?
As of late May 2026, Tesla Australia confirmed the official Outlet Adapter is priced at AUD $145 and listed as "coming soon" in the Tesla Shop. Given the YL is already delivering across Australia, official adapter stock is expected imminently.
We'll update this post as soon as the adapter is available — and we'll also be stocking aftermarket options for YL owners who want an alternative.
The Bottom Line
V2L on the Tesla Model Y L is real, it works, and it's officially documented in the Tesla owner's manual. For Australian conditions — camping, road trips, remote work, emergency backup and trade applications — it's a genuinely useful feature that no previous Tesla has offered here.
With up to 3.3kW of output, a simple touchscreen activation process, and access to most of the YL's 81kWh battery, you have more mobile power capacity than most portable generator setups — silently, cleanly, and without carrying extra fuel.
If you're taking delivery of a YL in 2026, V2L is one of the features you'll wonder how you ever lived without.
