Tesla Roof Rack Guide: What Can You Actually Carry?
If you own a Tesla and you've ever tried to squeeze a surfboard, kayak, or camping gear into the boot, you already know the problem. Tesla's minimalist design is brilliant — until you need to carry something big. That's where roof racks come in.
This guide covers everything you need to know about Tesla roof racks in Australia: which models they fit, what you can carry, what to avoid, and what's coming in stock soon.
Which Tesla Models Are Compatible?
Our 70kg rated roof racks are purpose-built for Tesla and currently fit the following models:
- Tesla Model Y (2021–2025) ✔
- Tesla Model Y Juniper (2025+) ✔
- Tesla Model 3 (all variants) ✔ — new stock arriving 10 June 2026
- Tesla Model 3 Highland (2024+) ✔ — new stock arriving 10 June 2026
- Tesla Model Y Large / YL (2025+) ✘ — YL-specific racks ordered, arriving July 2026
The YL 6-Seater has a new roof design that requires a completely different rack — our current Model Y racks will not fit. We've placed an order for YL-specific racks arriving July 2026. Contact us to join the waitlist.
How Do They Mount? Will They Damage the Roof?
This is the question we get asked most. Tesla's glass roof looks beautiful and the last thing any owner wants is to damage it.
Our racks mount using Tesla's existing roof rail points with what is called. "J" hook — no drilling, no adhesives, no modifications. They're designed specifically for Tesla's roof architecture, so the fit is flush and factory-clean.
Thousands of Tesla owners across Australia run roof racks without any roof damage.
The key is using racks that are purpose-built for Tesla, not generic universal racks that require adapters or improvised mounting.
What Can You Carry?
At 70kg rated, these racks handle a serious load. Here's what Tesla owners typically carry:
- Surfboards — one of the most popular uses. Grab a set of soft surf straps and you're set.
- Kayaks & canoes — single or double kayaks fit comfortably with the right cradles.
- Roof boxes — perfect for ski trips, camping gear, or extra luggage on family road trips.
- Camping gear — swags, tents, and bulky outdoor equipment that won't fit in the boot.
- Ladders & long items — tradies and DIYers use them for transporting materials.
What Should You NOT Carry? A Note on Bikes.
We get asked about bikes regularly — and our honest answer is: we don't recommend mounting bikes on Tesla roof racks.
Here's why. Tesla has a panoramic glass roof. When you're lifting a bike overhead to mount it on a roof rack, there's a real risk of the bike forks being dropped or swung into the glass. Glass roof repairs on a Tesla are expensive — we're talking thousands of dollars.
For bikes, a hitch-mount rack is a far safer and more practical solution. It keeps the bike at waist height, away from the glass entirely. We stock hitch-mount options — browse our accessories or contact us for a recommendation.
How Do Roof Racks Affect Tesla's Range?
This is a fair question. The honest answer: empty racks have a minimal impact. The aerodynamic profile of our racks is designed to reduce drag, so you won't notice much difference on your daily commute.
Loaded racks are a different story. A large roof box or a kayak creates significant wind resistance, which will reduce range — particularly at highway speeds. If you're planning a long road trip with a loaded rack, factor in an extra charging stop.
The practical tip: remove the racks when you're not using them. It takes about 10 minutes and keeps your range and efficiency at their best.
Do Roof Racks Affect Tesla's Autopilot or Cameras?
No. Our racks mount at the roof rail points and don't obstruct any of Tesla's cameras, sensors, or Autopilot hardware. Just make sure whatever you're carrying doesn't hang over the front of the car where it could interfere with the forward-facing camera.
