Tesla Towing Guide | Capacities, Campers & Bike Carriers

Understand Your Setup Before You Tow

A suitable tow bar can open up bike trips, trailer jobs and camper holidays with your Tesla. The important part is matching the entire setup to your exact vehicle and intended use, rather than choosing on the tow bar’s advertised rating alone.

This guide explains the differences between vehicle towing capacity, tow-bar ratings, trailer weight, towball download and accessory-carrier loads. It also covers wiring, braking, range planning and the information to include in your tow-bar enquiry.

General planning guidance: specifications differ by vehicle, model year, market, wheels and equipment. Your exact vehicle documentation, labels and the instructions for the installed equipment must be checked before towing. This page does not establish towing approval for an individual vehicle.

1. Vehicle Capacity and Tow-Bar Rating Are Different

A tow bar with a particular rating does not give every vehicle that towing capacity. Your vehicle must be approved for the intended use, and your combination must stay within the applicable limits for the vehicle, bar, mount, coupling, trailer and other components.

Our Tesla tow-bar listing advertises a bar rating of 1,600kg towing and 160kg ball load. Those are equipment ratings, not a promise that every Tesla can tow 1,600kg or carry 160kg on a bike carrier.

Check the owner’s manual applicable to your exact Australian vehicle, vehicle loading and towing labels, hitch identification and any vehicle-specific approval documentation. Do not transfer figures from a different model, generation or market without confirmation.

2. Tesla Towing-Capacity Reference Chart

The following figures come from the Tesla owner-manual screenshots reviewed for this guide. They are clearly identified by model year and market. They are not a verified Australian specification chart.

Reference examples only — confirm your individual Australian vehicle

Model YL 6-Seater Check the Australian vehicle-specific towing specification. The Model Y screenshot above does not establish YL capacity.

Why not use one figure for every Model Y?

Published specifications can differ between markets and packages. A 1,588kg Australian Model Y/YL tow-package figure has been supplied for review but has not been independently verified for this guide. It must not be treated as interchangeable with the overseas 1,600kg example.

A towing-capacity figure also does not answer every braking question.

Confirm the braking equipment and controller requirements for the exact vehicle and trailer. Having brakes fitted to a trailer is not enough if the required control system is absent or unsuitable.

3. The Weight Terms That Matter

Tare: the trailer’s stated empty weight

Tare is a starting point, not the weight you will necessarily tow on holiday. Check the manufacturer’s definition and what was included when the trailer was weighed. Factory options, batteries, water and equipment can change the weight of the actual trailer.

ATM: aggregate trailer mass

ATM is the trailer’s maximum permitted total loaded mass, including the load supported through the coupling when stationary. It is a limit, not proof of the trailer’s current weight.

GTM: gross trailer mass

GTM is the maximum loaded mass carried through the trailer’s wheels when coupled. It differs from ATM because some load is carried through the coupling.

Actual loaded trailer mass

This is what the trailer weighs in its travelling condition. Allow for water, food, bedding, cooking equipment, batteries, spare wheels, gas bottles where fitted and other additions. Use appropriate weighing equipment rather than estimating a heavily loaded setup.

Towball download

This is the downward load imposed on the towball by the trailer coupling. Check the vehicle, bar, mount and coupling limits separately. Towball download also contributes to the load carried by the towing vehicle and can affect axle loads.

GVM, axle limits and combination limits

Gross vehicle mass is the vehicle’s maximum permitted loaded mass. Passengers, luggage, fitted accessories and trailer ball load all need to be accounted for. Axle limits must also be respected, even where the total vehicle mass is below GVM. Where a gross combination limit is specified, check it for the loaded vehicle and trailer together.

4. Choosing a Camper or Trailer

A small camper may be a suitable match for an appropriately equipped Tesla, but appearance and empty weight alone do not determine suitability.

  1. Confirm that your exact Tesla is approved for towing and identify its applicable limits.
  2. Obtain the camper’s identification-plate limits, actual travelling weight and measured towball load.
  3. Include factory options, water, batteries, luggage and camping equipment in the loaded calculation.
  4. Check the vehicle’s remaining load allowance and axle limits with passengers and luggage aboard.
  5. Confirm the braking, controller, lighting, coupling and safety-chain requirements for the proposed combination.
  6. Check the mounting arrangement and coupling height against the equipment instructions before proceeding.

Do not assume every camper is suitable simply because its empty weight is below the tow bar’s rating. Equally, a listed maximum rating is not a recommendation to load every setup to that maximum.

5. Trailer Brakes, Controllers and Wiring

Lighting wiring and brake control are different systems. A trailer-lighting loom operates compatible lighting connections. It should not be assumed to provide electric-brake control, auxiliary power or every connection needed by a camper.

Some trailers require an electric-brake controller, while others use different braking arrangements. The correct system depends on the vehicle, trailer and applicable requirements. Have the complete arrangement confirmed by a suitably qualified installer.

A 7-pin flat connector does not, by itself, prove that every required circuit is connected or suitable. Identify additional requirements such as brake control, trailer battery charging or auxiliary connections separately.

Never improvise a connection to the Tesla’s braking system. Use the approved instructions and compatible equipment for the vehicle and trailer.

6. Bike Carriers Have Their Own Load Limits

Carrying bikes on a receiver is not the same loading case as towing a trailer. The carrier’s weight, bike weight, leverage, mounting arrangement and the vehicle’s accessory limits all matter.

The 2024+ Model 3 UK-English manual screenshot reviewed for this guide shows a 55kg accessory-load reference, including the carrier itself. That is not a universal Australian allowance and does not automatically approve an aftermarket carrier.

For illustration only, an 18kg carrier plus 37kg of bikes totals 55kg. Both the carrier’s own limits and the limits applicable to the exact vehicle and mounting system must still be checked. A lower applicable limit takes precedence.

Check clearance, security, lights and number-plate visibility. If a carrier obscures required lights or the plate, confirm the appropriate lighting-board and plate arrangements before use.

7. Standard and Raised Mounting Options

A standard mount and a raised mount place the towball at different heights. The correct choice depends on the vehicle, compatible mounting system and trailer coupling height.

Do not choose a raised mount purely because it looks stronger or offers more clearance. Use a compatible configuration that meets the equipment instructions. Never invert, drill, weld or modify a mounting component unless its manufacturer explicitly permits the change.

Confirm whether the selected configuration includes the towball, mount and retaining hardware. Receiver-only and complete towing configurations may have different inclusions.

8. Trailer Mode and Vehicle Software

Follow the towing and Trailer Mode instructions for your exact Tesla. The Model Y manual example reviewed states that Trailer Mode must be active when towing.

Do not assume that fitting an aftermarket bar or wiring automatically activates Trailer Mode, adds Tesla towing software or reproduces every function of a genuine Tesla tow package. Establish the software and electrical requirements for the individual vehicle before use.

9. Range and Charging on a Towing Trip

Towing increases energy consumption. Trailer shape and aerodynamic drag, loaded weight, speed, wind, terrain and weather all affect the result. There is no single range reduction that accurately describes every camper and journey.

Plan charging stops around the loaded combination, leave a sensible reserve and monitor actual energy use early in the trip. Check charging-site access and parking layout, as a trailer may affect how you reach a charger or whether uncoupling is needed.

Do not assume the unhitched range estimate will remain representative while towing.

10. Before-Departure Checklist

  • Vehicle and loaded trailer are within all applicable mass, axle, towing and coupling limits.
  • Compatible coupling, retaining hardware, safety connections and any required breakaway system are correctly fitted and checked.
  • Brakes and any required controller are set up and tested according to their instructions.
  • Trailer indicators, brake lights and other required lighting work correctly.
  • Vehicle and trailer tyres are suitable, sound and set to the pressures specified for the actual setup. Do not copy tyre pressures from a different model or market.
  • Load is secured and distributed according to the vehicle and trailer instructions.
  • Mirrors and rearward visibility are appropriate for the combination.
  • Towing software and Trailer Mode requirements have been checked.
  • Route, charging stops and access have been planned for the loaded combination.

11. While You Are Towing

Allow greater stopping distance, avoid abrupt inputs and make wider turns to account for the trailer’s path. Reduce speed where conditions require and follow the applicable limits and equipment instructions.

At suitable stops, check tyres, lights, coupling security and load restraint. Stop safely if the combination feels unstable or behaves unexpectedly rather than continuing and hoping it settles.

12. Mobile Installation or Supply Only

My Tesla Accessories offers mobile tow-bar installation in South East Queensland unless another location is arranged beforehand. Coverage and appointments depend on the service address and selected work.

Supply only is available for fitting by your own installer. Use the instructions for the exact bar, vehicle and fitting kit. Fitting involves safety-critical fasteners and electrical work; use a qualified installer if you do not have the necessary tools or experience.

13. What to Include in Your Tow-Bar Enquiry

Read the guide, explore the builder and review the itemised price before sending your enquiry. Include your Tesla model, year, intended use, selected components, installation preference and postcode.

For a trailer or camper, include its model, loaded mass, towball load and braking arrangement where known. For a bike carrier, include the carrier model, its weight and the combined bike weight. Mark unknown details as unknown rather than guessing.

The enquiry review is the point to confirm suitability, inclusions, any extra equipment, installation or delivery and the final price before proceeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does fitting a 1,600kg bar mean every Tesla can tow 1,600kg?

No. The vehicle’s approved towing limits and all other applicable equipment limits still apply.

Can I use the 160kg bar ball-load rating for bikes?

Not automatically. Accessory-carrier loads must be checked separately for the exact vehicle, mounting system and carrier, including the carrier’s own weight.

Can I tow without a brake controller?

That depends on the trailer’s braking system and the requirements for the exact combination. Do not assume that a lighting loom provides brake control.

Can I use overseas Tesla specifications for my Australian vehicle?

Not without confirming they apply. The overseas examples in this guide explain the distinctions; they are not blanket Australian vehicle approvals.

Does the bar enable Trailer Mode?

Do not assume so. Mechanical fitment, wiring and vehicle software requirements are separate checks.

Will a camper reduce my range?

Yes. The amount varies with the camper, load, speed and conditions. Plan charging around the loaded combination and actual consumption.

Can I configure before committing to purchase?

Yes. Use the builder to explore the options and itemised pricing, then submit an enquiry. No payment is taken through the builder.
